What Is Babesia?
Babesia is a microscopic parasite that infects red blood cells. Like Lyme, it’s spread by deer ticks, and it often shows up alongside Lyme disease. Many of the patients I see have both. Perhaps 25050% of may patients have a Babesia co-infection.
Lyme weakens your immune system, while Babesia stresses your oxygen delivery system. Together, they make recovery more complicated.
Symptoms of Babesia
Babesia feels very different from Lyme. Instead of joint pain or brain fog being the main issue, you may notice symptoms that look more like malaria:
- Night sweats (sometimes drenching)
- Air hunger or shortness of breath, even at rest
- Unexplained fevers or chills
- A unique type of fatigue that feels heavier than Lyme fatigue
- Headaches
- Dark urine (rare, but possible)
While ‘Air hunger” is a common symptom of a Babesia infection, the most common symptoms are mild to soaking night sweats or even spontaneous overheating, commonly at rest. Often there is exercise intolerance as folks become out of breath and sweat extremely easily.
One thing I often hear from my patients is: “I just feel like I can’t get enough air in.” That’s a hallmark Babesia symptom.
Why Babesia Matters
If we only treat Lyme but overlook Babesia, you won’t fully recover. Standard Lyme treatments don’t kill Babesia, so this parasite requires a different approach.
Treatment Approaches
When Babesia is part of the picture, I may recommend:
- Medications specific for Babesia
- Herbal therapies to help eradicate Babesia like cryptolepis and artemisinin, which are powerful natural anti-parasitics
- Immune and detox support to help your body clear infection
- Lifestyle strategies such as hydration, better sleep, and anti-inflammatory nutrition
Because Babesia lives in red blood cells, treatment usually takes time and persistence. As seen in Lyme disease, sometimes the labs may be inconclusive and treatment trials may be indicated.
