Irritable Bowel Syndrome

by Jacob Aguiar, ND

Irritable bowel syndrome is a diagnosis of exclusion.  This means your doctor has likely run a gamut of blood tests, diagnostic procedures, and imaging to rule out other serious diseases before the diagnosis is made.

Symptoms & Diagnosis of Irritable Bowel Syndrome (IBS)

The diagnosis of IBS can be disheartening for some patients, because there is not a clear treatment approach in the allopathic community.  As naturopathic doctors, however, we recognize the diverse and varied reasons someone may have the symptoms leading to an IBS diagnosis.

These symptoms include:  abdominal pain and cramping, diarrhea, constipation, alternating diarrhea and constipation, gas and bloating.

Diagnosing & Treating Irritable Bowel Syndrome

While medical doctors typically prescribe pharmaceuticals to treat each individual symptom, at North Coast Family Health we get to the root cause of your digestive complaints and direct our treatments there.

There are potentially hundreds of causes and factors contributing to IBS; however successful diagnosis and treatment typically focuses on the major causes, which include food allergies or intolerances, suboptimal microbial flora in the gut, and chronic stress being manifested as physical symptoms.

This last cause is incredibly common in kids, as they often are less capable of expressing and processing emotions, which become manifested in the body.

Testing for Irritable Bowel Syndrome

At NCFH, our naturopathic doctors use state of the art, sophisticated testing to help uncover the true causes of your IBS.  These tests, in addition to a thorough history and physical, will guide your naturopathic doctor in developing a personalized and effective treatment approach.

How we treat Irritable Bowel Syndrome

Some of the treatments that may be recommended once the underlying cause is discovered include dietary modification and removal of certain foods, healing the intestinal lining, replacing good bacteria while removing unhealthy microbes, supplementing digestive enzymes that may be deficient, and approaches for stress management, among others.

Having decades of experience successfully treating digestive complaints, the doctors at North Coast Family Health are confident they can assist you in feeling well.
